Wisdom teeth evaluation and removal in Cooper City
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come in, and they do not always have room to do it well. At our dental office in Cooper City, we evaluate them and explain whether they can stay or whether removing them makes sense for you.

What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the back of the mouth, usually the last to come in. When they are impacted, painful, infected or crowded, removal may be recommended. Jonari Dental in Cooper City evaluates wisdom teeth and performs extractions; complex cases are evaluated individually by your dentist.
Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the teeth at the very back of the mouth. They usually appear in the late teens or early twenties, although this varies from person to person. Some people have all four, some have fewer, and some never see them at all.
Many mouths do not have enough room for them. When a wisdom tooth cannot come in properly, it may stay trapped under the gum or the bone (impacted), come in at an angle, or only partly break through the gum.
Wisdom teeth do not always need to come out. Extraction, a procedure that is often necessary for wisdom teeth, is recommended when they cause problems or are likely to. Your dentist will evaluate each tooth and explain what makes sense for you.
Signs a wisdom tooth may need attention
- Pain, swelling or tenderness at the back of the jaw
- Red, swollen or bleeding gums around a tooth that is partly through
- A bad taste or bad breath that does not go away
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully
- Crowding or pressure on the teeth in front
- Decay in a wisdom tooth or the tooth next to it, which can be hard to clean
Why evaluate your wisdom teeth
- Early AnswersAn exam and X-rays show how the teeth are positioned and whether they may cause trouble.
- Relief From SymptomsRemoving a problem tooth may relieve pain, pressure or recurring gum irritation.
- Protection for Nearby TeethWisdom teeth that are hard to clean can affect the tooth in front of them.

How does wisdom tooth removal work?
- Exam & X-RaysWe examine the area and take X-rays to see the position of the wisdom teeth, the nearby teeth and the surrounding structures.
- Your OptionsYour dentist explains whether the tooth can be monitored or should come out, and how the procedure would be done. Complex cases are evaluated individually.
- Comfort During TreatmentLocal anesthesia numbs the area. If you feel anxious, let us know: we offer nitrous oxide to help you relax.
- AftercareYou receive clear instructions for the days after the extraction, and we check on you if needed to make sure you are healing as expected.
Recovery after wisdom tooth removal
Some soreness, swelling and mild bleeding are common after an extraction. Your dentist will give you specific instructions, which usually include resting, eating soft foods, keeping the area clean, and avoiding anything that could disturb the blood clot that forms in the socket, such as drinking through a straw or smoking.
Call us if pain gets worse instead of better, if bleeding does not stop, or if you notice signs of infection, such as fever or increasing swelling.
Does every wisdom tooth have to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that has come in fully, is healthy and can be cleaned well may simply be monitored. Removal is usually considered when a tooth is impacted, infected, decayed, painful, or when it affects other teeth.
Dr. Rosario Streett will review your X-rays and explain what makes sense for you.

Do I have to have my wisdom teeth removed?
Not always. If they are healthy, fully in place and easy to clean, they may only need to be monitored. Your dentist will evaluate them with an exam and X-rays and tell you what is recommended for you.
What does it mean that a wisdom tooth is impacted?
It means the tooth is trapped under the gum or in the bone and cannot come in normally. Impacted teeth may cause pain or infection, or affect nearby teeth, which is why removal is often recommended.
Can all wisdom teeth be removed in your office?
It depends on the tooth. Complex cases are evaluated individually, based on the exam and X-rays, and your dentist will explain where and how your treatment would be done.
Will I be comfortable during the procedure?
We use local anesthesia to numb the area, so you should not feel sharp pain, although you may feel pressure. If you feel nervous, we also offer nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, to help you relax.
What can I eat after the extraction?
Soft, cool or lukewarm foods are usually advised for the first days, and hard, crunchy or very hot foods should usually be avoided. Your dentist will give you specific instructions for your case.
